The mercury has officially dropped, and no amount of whinging and whining from us will bring back the warm daisy dukes weather we’ve been so desperately clinging on to. Clearly we aren’t fans of the cold, but despite this, we have to admit, there are some things we’re looking forward to. Fluffy scarves, long, warm baths and hot chocolate by our imaginary fire place? Yes please! But of course as makeup buffs, we’re particularly eager to rock bold red lips every day of the week without being judged. We have a penchant for bright lips all year round, so it’s not like we need an excuse to whip out a scarlet bullet, but now we can confidently pop on a bold, red lip for a trip to the corner shop without attracting weird stares. In honour of the start of red lip season, we’ve put together a look featuring the star of the show using purely affordable ‘drugstore’ products.
This year our satin lipsticks have taken the back seat with matte finishes our current muse. For a red matte lippie, we’ve been reaching for Rimmel’s The Only 1 Matte in Take the Stage. It’s a classic red that really packs a punch. The upside of going matte is that you don’t have to worry about your lipstick transferring all over your hot chocolate mug.
When wearing a bold lip, we like to keep the rest of our makeup relatively neutral. Here we opted for a light and simple base, using Rimmel’s new Wake Me Up Foundation and Innoxa’s Cover & Correct Concealer Face Palette for extra coverage. Both products are quite hydrating and forgiving when it comes to any dryness which is ideal for ’winter skin’ or those with dry skin types. You can be more generous with your contouring, but again, the star of the show for this look is the red lip, so we chose to steer clear from heavily sculpted cheekbones. Instead, we picked up the slightest bit of the bronzer and contour shade from Barry M’s Chisel Cheeks Contour Kit to add subtle definition and warmth to the face.
Sticking with the Autumnal theme, we went with subtle gold tones on the lids, using a brown matte shadow to softly deepen the crease and create dimension. While we like to pair a red lip with neutral eyeshadow, liner and decently bold brows are a must to balance out the look. You want to avoid looking too bottom heavy with obnoxiously loud lipstick and nothing on the top half of your face. Remember, we need Ying and Yang! Make your eyes pop by working some liner into your lashes, and finally, frame your face by generously filling in your brows.
So while the thought of the chilly weather is less than appealing to us Summer babies, the prospect of us getting mileage out of our stash of red lipsticks has us feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
