Reflecting on the year that was, we’ve rounded up our most reached for lipsticks of 2016.
When we started putting this post together, we sifted through our makeup bags and quickly realised that the lip products we reached for most this year are predominantly ‘drug store’. From the beginning of our makeup journey, we’ve always had a soft spot for drug store lippies. Most if not all of our holy grail lipsticks and glosses come from more affordable brands, so we weren’t all that surprised that we’ve gravitated towards these products in our drawers over the past 12 months. Despite being affordable, thanks to brands like NYX and Revlon, drug store brands are giving their luxury counterparts a run for their money in terms of quality and shade range. Enough blabbing, here’s our most reached for lipsticks of 2016…
Arbonne Smoothed Over Lipstick in Guava * | This doesn’t need much introduction! We reviewed this a while back along with other shades from the range (here). This fuschia lipstick is another one reach for when we need an extra pop of colour. The pigmented lipstick isn’t extremely hydrating in comparison to something like the Loreal Color Riche Nutri Shine Lipstick, but usually a little lip balm underneath works a treat. This also works beautifully as a cream blush!
L’Oreal Color Riche Nutri Shine Lipstick in Shiny Apricot | We picked up this lipstick when we were hunting for something coral a while back. Another oldie, Shiny Apricot is our main girl for a quick pop of colour. The buttery and glossy lipstick is one of the most hydrating we own, and can be quickly applied without the hassle of a mirror. Unlike the Arbonne Smoothed Over Lipsticks, this one is slightly more sheer, but equally gorgeous. There’s something about this lipstick that instantly brightens up a look which is why we keep on coming back to it!
Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid in Nude Flush * | Finding a good matte lipstick that won’t dry out our lips has not been easy, but this year we’ve discovered a few including this one. The Vivid Matte’ are super comfortable and the colour pay off is amazing. The liquid lipstick does dry to a matte finish, but the texture is almost velvety. Unlike so many other matte lip products on the market right now, this does not leave our lips dehydrated or bleed into the lines of our lips. Finally a matte lip product that we can wear! Nude Flush isn’t really nude at all, but more of a dusty pink, so don’t pick this up expecting a textbook nude lip.
NYX Butter Gloss in Tiramisu | One of our top nude lip picks, this was the first ever Butter Gloss we bought. The creamy and deliciously scented gloss is moistursing, and definitely our most used lip product of the year. We always reach for Tiramisu when we want a nude lip, or trying to achieve that no-makeup makeup. Layering this Butter Gloss over a brighter, bolder lipstick is also a good away to tone done the shade and add a little sheen. We’re cheating a little here as this isn’t actually a lipstick, but anyone who has tried any of the Butter Glosses will understand why we couldn’t leave it out!
Revlon Superlustrous Lipstick in Demure | Another one of our top nude lip picks, this lipstick is an oldie, but a goodie. Demure is our go-to my lips but better lipstick. Revlon is probably one of the leaders in lippies both in the drugstore and across all the makeup brands on the market. Hydrating and comfortable on the lips, this lipstick will definitely be a staple in our makeup bags for years to come.
Rimmel The Only 1 Lipstick in Revolution Red * | This is by far one of the most underrated products of the year. Finding the perfect red lippie is a tough mission, but this one may really be the one. Extremely pigmented and and ridiculously long lasting, we can’t rave about this beauty enough. If we ever want a bold, classic red lip, this is what we put on. In fact we rate all the lipsticks from The Only 1 range. The formula is consistent across the 6 shades we own, with other faves including Listen Up!, Cherry Coral and Call Me Crazy.
