Being a makeup enthusiast can be an expensive hobby to have. With new launches daily, it’s difficult to resist the temptation to spend your paycheck on the latest beauty drops. The occasional self-enforced beauty ban might help out your bank account, but if self-restraint isn’t your strong point, then we’ve got a few tips to help you save pennies while satisfying your makeup addiction.
Try Before You Buy
We’ve had our fair share of disappointing products. Regardless of how much you spend on it, it’s always a bummer. But of course when you’re shelling out a decent slice of your pay check, things quickly escalate from disappointing to painful. To avoid spending your hard earned dollars on a flop, try out the product before committing to the purchase. Sometimes swatching it in store isn’t enough, so ask for a sample to take home and try out. Not all stores offer samples, but there is no harm in asking.
Any seasoned shopper will know that discount codes are your bestie. Most coupon codes are only valid for a short time, but often if your’e a student, many places will also offer special all year round discounts for students. Yeah-ya! We love UNiDAYS which is a site that brings together the best student discounts on massive brands both online and in store. It’s FREE to join, so already you can tell that they’re out to help you save. There are all year round discounts for UNiDAYS members plus limited offers that pop up every now and then. The best thing is there is no need to carry around your student card which is music to our ears. We can’t count the number of times we’ve gone to take up a student offer just to open our wallets and find that we’ve left our student card at home!! Nope, all you need to do to redeem your discount is to flash your UNiDAYS ID. You can download their mobile app and access all the offers on the go. As well as beauty, brands featured on the site range from fashion such as The Iconic, Beginning Boutique and Lee to automotive, electronic and travel. Back to the makeup, the stand out discounts on the website have to be the 45% off you get on your first Bellabox and the 25% off student discount on Australis! So that means you can put all the Velourlips in your cart and feel 25% less guilty!
Subscribe and Follow
As the saying goes, the early bird catches the worm. So to avoid missing out on flash sales, it pays to follow your favourite brands across their social platforms as well as signing up to their newsletter. To be honest, the first thing most of us do in the morning is check our phones, so following your favourite brands will mean you can be notified of sales bright and early! There are also accounts out there dedicated to sharing the latest discounts in the beauty world, so it’s also worth following them if your’e looking to bag yourself a bargain.
Don’t Be a Snob
Some of our holy grail products are from the ‘drugstore’. While some people steer clear of the more affordable lines, buying their makeup exclusively from luxury brands, we’d proudly say that 80% of our stash are ‘drugstore’ brands. With the beauty market becoming increasingly competitive, more affordable brands like Rimmel, Maybelline and Australis have really stepped up their game. In fact, we’re going to put it out there and say that the drugstore does some things better than their high end counterparts. In our opinion, they’re definitely winning the mascara and nail polish race. So don’t turn your nose up at drugstore makeup. We know that their stands can be more difficult to navigate and may not look as pretty as the makeup halls you see in department stores or large concept stores, but there are some gems in there. If there’s anything we’ve learnt since delving into the world of beauty, it’s that a bigger price tag does not necessarily guarantee a great product.
When it comes to makeup, one of the savviest ways to safe guard your hip pocket is to find products that are multi-purpose. Don’t let labels dictate how you use your makeup. It’s all about thinking outside of the bullet. By far our favourite way to maximise our makeup stash is to use lipstick as blush. We just dab and blend as we would a regular cream blush for a glowy, youthful flush. For something bright that stands the 9-5 test, we have been loving The Only 1 lipsticks on the apples of our cheeks. They’re the perfect pick me up and look beau-tif-ful both on the lips and as a blush. Other ways to make the most of your makeup bag include using mascara as brow gel (drier formulas or a mascara that has dried out a bit works best), lipstick as a cream contour or bronzer and powder dusted over lipstick for a matte kiss! The list goes on.
